Many of you may have heard about Epik High Tablo's recent transfer to YG Entertainment by now, which is home to some of Kpop's most talented acts such as 1TYM, Jinusean, Big Mama, Se7en, Gummy, Big Bang, 2NE1 and Psy, and I was really happy for Tablo after hearing that. After years of being surrounded by the whole "fake education" controversy, I am just glad that he's back at last. I personally am a big fan of Epik High. I first heard of them when I was in primary school even though I knew little of Kpop back then. I totally remember being like, "Oh, these guys are amazing..." while listening to their songs back in the day. They are one of Kpop's most popular HipHop groups of all time and they were one of those groups who set the bar for other HipHop artists to follow in the succeeding years. And if you are going to look at Kpop today compared to how it was before, we have to thank legendary groups, Epik High being one of them, for paving the way for other HipHop acts to follow suit because we have some of the most talented HipHop artists in both underground and mainstream Kpop today.
I'm pretty sure that most of us know Tablo (Daniel Armand Lee or Lee Seon Woong) not just as a member of Epik High, but also as a graduate of the prestigious Standford University. He has a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and a Master's Degree in Creative Writing (if I am not mistaken) from the aforesaid university, but many detractors and anti-fans have questioned his educational attainment ever since he debuted with Epik High. As the group's popularity continued to rise, the situation got worse, which eventually led to the star acquiring a mild form of depression or something like that from the entire mess. I have watched how he responded, reacted and coped with the never-ending controversy over the years and as a fan, I can help but be sad for him. I don't know where all the hate is coming from and why many refuse to believe that he has indeed acquired "that kind" of education from a good school. I'm sorry for saying this, but I think it's plain stupid and immature for a lot of Korean citizens to bash the man and claim that he has faked his educational background for his personal gain. For what reason? To be popular? To stand out from the rest of his peers (singers) in the industry? I guess there's no need do that because at the end of the day, real talent, dedication and passion trumps everything else, so resorting to fraud just to be able to step above the shadows and stand out above everyone else wouldn't even be necessary at all.
The song is simple, but it is beautiful. I don't know if he wrote the lyrics of the song himself because it basically talks about his life in recent years and how he has been dealing with all of the controversies and issues that are being thrown at him by the public.I like how he associated "asking for help or support" to an airbag, which is reflected by the line "I need an airbag" throughout the song. The melody is simple and familiar. It is probably something that we have all heard before, but knowing that Tablo's singing the song makes me appreciate it even more because I can feel his pain and I know what he is going through. It's emotional, deep and an honest confession of his thoughts and inner feelings that the general public doesn't know.
