The about me section of an avid Asian drama fan in her blog site, http://celsius-thoughts.blogspot.com, caught my attention saying "I'm also a victim of drama obsession. One of symptoms of this disease is daydreaming about the dramas everywhere whether you're in class, walking down the stairs, sleeping, even as you are walking...creepy isn't it?" Haha! Creepy as it is, I'm afraid I'm also suffering the same symptoms for the longest time now. Guilty as charge, I've been an Asian drama fan since I was a High School freshman, way way back 2001. The very first series I've watched was the phenomenal Meteor Garden. Up until now, during breaks or vacations, until I graduated college, the drama fever and rage hasn't died down and it looks like there are no signs of me stopping on haunting the best Asian dramas out there from time to time. Whenever there is a new release, or whenever I come across a blog or two, and I get convinced or become interested to watch a certain series, I immediately start without hesitation. I've watched countless dramas, may it be Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, etc...etc...etc. I've seen almost the same storyline twisted in different stories in over a hundred dramas over the years. Most of them are almost the same, some are different in another way, but most of them have something in common. Regardless of that, after finishing off a series, I always make sure that I feature the ones I really liked in this blog.
Before the review classes for the NLE starts, I originally planned to preoccupy myself with different things such as writing a new poem or going somewhere for a short vacation again. Last minute, I ended up visiting a blog of an avid Asian drama fan. If you are curious, she is Autumspet, and her blog site is at http://midnights-dreams.blogpsot.com. She features a lot of popular and noteworthy Asian dramas in her blog, mostly those that she has watched herself. I was reading one of her posts last Sunday about "Autumn’s Concerto" (a popular Taiwanese series which aired from October 2009 to February 2010, whose alternate title is "Next Stop Happiness" or Xia Yi Zhan, Xing Fu) — it’s plot, synopsis, the cast, the production, and everything in between. All the comments coming from those who watched it too were very persuasive and encouraging to a fellow drama addict like me. There were a lot of Taiwanese dramas who were popular in 2009 such as “Down With Love”, “Momo Love”, and many others but Autumn’s concerto was considerably the most highly rated and highly praised among them all. Viewers have labelled it as the most beautiful Taiwanese drama ever. With these kinds of comments and praises, I was so convinced that I should watch it. True enough, I wasn’t disappointed. I really loved it. If I have this sort of hall of fame thing right now where I can place my favorite dramas of all time, I would definitely include Autumn’s Concerto in it. I loved everything. I love the plot and most especially the characters who made the original book version come into life. The cast includes Van Ness Wu (Ren Guang Xi), Ady An (Liang Mu Chen), Tiffany Xu (He Yi Quan), Chris Wu (Hua Tuo ye)and Xiao Xiao Bin (Liang Xiao Le/Ren Xiao Le)among others.

Here's a Synopsis on the Plot:
Ren Guang Xi (Van Ness Wu), a cocky law student, seems to lead the perfect life. He's the sole successor to a huge and famous business and a talented ice hockey player. But in reality, his lonely life lacks joy, laughter and motivation. That is until he meets Liang Mu Chen (Ady An), the new bento seller at his school canteen. Although orphaned at a young age, Mu Chen does not let her past affect her and lives life with great passion and determination. A harmless bet brings the two together and Guang Xi slowly changes as Mu Chen teaches him how to give and love. Tragedy strikes when Guang Xi suddenly has to go through a major brain surgery which causes him to lose his memory. His mother begs Mu Chen to leave him and the latter has no choice but to do so. Little does she know that she already has Guang Xi's child, Xiao Le(Xiao Xiao Bin). Six years pass. Mu Cheng lives a quiet life with her young son in the countryside while Guang Xi is now a successful lawyer and is engaged to He Yi Qian, the kind and beautiful doctor who took care of him after his surgery. A strangely familiar piano piece stirs Guang Xi's heart as he struggles to recall his past romance with Mu Chen. How will the couple make up for six years of lost time? Happiness, which stop do I alight at? :)
My Take on the Plot:
At first, you would think it's your typical Asian drama, where there's a really rich and arrogant male lead, coupled with a poor strong-willed and determined female counterpart. It's usually the typical story that we see on TV right? When they meet, they couldn't even get along a bit. They argue at first, and then later on, they start to get along, spend time together, get to know each other, and then they finally fall in love. It was almost like a fairytale love story, where the poor girl meets his prince charming, and they try to fight for their love, against all odds.
In the first few episodes, the story was very predictable. It was typically much like the usual drama. Later on, it veered away from the usual fairytale "happy ending" theme. The lives of the characters started to twist in a single click, after Van Ness looses his memory because of a series of unfortunate events. Their lives even became more complicated 6 years after as Ady already had Van Ness' son with her. Van Ness became a successful lawyer and he was engaged to another girl. Van Ness lost his memory that he couldn't even remember anything in the past except those that happened after the surgery, including Ady. So he forgot how she dumped her, after he woke up in the OR bed during the day of his surgery. Fast forward six years after, they meet again, and the real drama happens. Van Ness feels this certain connection with Ady and their son, but he couldn't explain it. Everytime he asked Ady about it, she would deny it and try to divert the story to another topic. Ady struggles as she finds herself falling for him again. When Van Ness remembers everything through this special bracelet which is also featured in this post below, he gets so mad, his wedding gets cancelled, and he tries to get even with Ady by forcing her into a marriage in order to be with their son. In actuality, he still loves her and she feels the same way to, but things become more difficult and complicated that they can't even spill their true feelings.
Actually, the series is full of drama, but based on what I have seen, you will not be disappointed if you would actually watch it. The series in itself is very heartwarming. I loved the work and effort that they gave off to make the series worthwhile. It was more than worth my time. I loved it so much that I had a hard time containing all my emotions while watching it. I felt for all the characters. I felt for Van Ness, for Ady, for their son, and even for the second leads. It was almost like watching it in 3D. Haha! The first few episodes already got me hooked. I'm sure you will love it if you'll give it a try.
My Take On The Characters:
1.On Van Ness...
I’m so used to seeing Van Ness Wu with baggy clothes and the like. He has this tough guy image on TV. Because he has a good built, everyone is so used to him showing off his abs whenever he is in a music video or in a TV appearance. This is my first time seeing Van Ness portray in a heavy drama like Autumn’s Concerto. This series immediately rang a bell on my ears knowing that Van Ness Wu would be in it. Knowing how popular he is in Asia, I was like, "I' will watch this". But I was so busy with graduation requirements so I never had the time. On a side note, I kept on monitoring the episode guide of the series during my free time. The ratings were so high, and everyone kept saying they were addicted on the drama. Since it aired every Sunday in Taiwan, it became the Sunday habit of avid Taiwanese viewers late 2009 and early 2010.
At first, I was quite apprehensive on whether Van Ness Wu, who is known to be a really spunky singer on stage, on top of being a serious actor, would pull it off in a role like this. His stint in Meteor Garden made him an overnight Asian superstar together with the other F4 members (now JVKV), but I've never seen him act in a major project as the lead male actor such as this. It actually came as a shock to me because I know it was such a big role to portray, and it will require a lot of effort and dedication in his part to fill in the shoes of his character in the series, Ren Guang Xi. Since the series is based on a popular book, it sure gave him a lot of pressure in his part as he memorized his lines 2 months before the shoot by bringing his MP3 player everywhere. He also tried to consult his lawyer friends to gather ideas he can use for the role to become more realistic as it is.
Van Ness was so good. As much as I hate to admit it, I was having a hard time controlling my tears. I was mystified the whole time. I have to give the credit to him during the "crying while shouting scenes". I was so silly that whenever he cried while begging for Ady to stay, I felt like he was talking to me. Haha! The man has improved so much, that after watching the series, I felt like there's more to him than his tough and sexy image onscreen. He deserves to have an award for this portrayal. And he deserves to be recognized. His growth as an actor can be seen in this series. You'll love how he smiles and stares at Ady, and you will also love how he makes Ady's life miserable in the earlier part of the story, reminiscent of his old F4 days. His Mandarin improved a lot. Every emotion caught me. Now, I'm smelling a nomination for him at the upcoming Golden Bell Awards. I wish he would take on more serious roles like this. There are a lot of scenes where he shows off his abs. If you will say he was hot back then, I would say, he became even hotter now. He still looks good. Minus the long almost too girly straight hair, which I think suits him even better.
When he said the lines, "It could have been better if we have met earlier. You could have taken me along bus rides, so that I can sit beside you, and you wouldn't have to be alone." I was caught off guard. This was one of the many moments in the drama where he truly shined. Similarly, when he said,"Did you know that on ice, when you give your hand to the other person, it is almost the same as entrusting your life to him. When I told you that I will hold on to you, it's the same as promising to protect you, no matter what it takes,"it was very promising. In forums, there were a lot of comments saying, any girl on the right mind would fall for it if it, and I agree. Haha! :) Before he lost his memory, he wrote a letter to Ady saying, "After the surgery, regardless I will survive or not, I want you to be happy. Someday, you will meet a guy who will truly love you, perhaps even more than I did. Just think of me occasionally and I will be happy. I'll be in another world watching you."Awww! Even 6 years later, whenever he would ask Ady things like, "I've been seeing an image of a girl a lot lately, but I couldn't remember who she is. Maybe she was very important to me 6 years ago. It's strange how close to this place I feel. I must have come often to this place. It's crazy, I've never felt this way before! You seem to know a lot of things about me. Somehow I feel that you are part of my past. Are you sure we never met 6 years ago?"it was a shocker. Haha! You will love and hate Van Ness in this series at the same time, but believe me, you will love him more than you hate him. Hehe. (Laughs...)
2.On Ady...
Audrey An (popularly called Ady) was just as amazing as Van Ness. She played as the female lead, Liang Mu Chen. I couldn't think of anyone who can play this role better than her. She has been flying back and forth from Taiwan, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and other places to film movies here and dramas everywhere. Ady has a wide range of experience when it comes to acting. She is a very hardworking actress (and singer too) that after finishing the shoot for Autumn's Concerto, she flew to mainland China immediately to shot for another movie. By far, Autumn's Concerto is my favorite among all the projects Ady ever had.
Since her character raised her son with Van Ness alone, she worked her butt off in order to support him, especially that he has Type 1 Diabetes. I'm sure all the single mothers out there can relate to her story. Everytime Ady would cry, it was so realistic that I always felt for her. The decision of casting her in this project was splendid. It was a good decision for the production to choose her. She's so pretty, and she is so natural. Her chemistry with Van Ness was awesome. She had a lot of lines in this series, my favorite among them all was "Actually, I don't really care wherever we'll go. As long as you're at that stop, it'll be happiness." 3.On Xiao Xiao Bin This child is merely 6 years old but Xiao Xiao Bin commands attention every time he is in a production, whether it is a series or a drama. This series made him a superstar. He was so loved by viewers after playing the character Liang Xiao Le. This child actor is the biggest revelation of his generation. After appearing in this drama, he received a lot of offers in dramas and movies, and even commercials. He is so adorable that you will love every bit of him. His presence is so refreshing, you can't help but admire his cuteness. He plays as a really smart child who grew up without a father for the last 6 years. He has this strange thought that his father is an alien from DaLa Planet and that he has a space ship. He also has this transmitter that he uses to call his daddy alien whenever he misses him. It's so cute! The interaction between him and Van Ness was so heartwarming. I was trying to hold back my tears from episode 1 to 12.
During a scene where he had a family day at school, Van Ness surprised him by preparing to be his alien daddy, when in fact he really is his father. When he said the words "I know you are not my dad, I also know my dad is not an Alien. I'm sorry for bothering you. I'm sorry for the inconvenience it might have brought you for pretending to be my dad. I know that Mu Chen just made up the story that my dad is an alien, that he is from the Dala Planet, and that my transmitter is just an old radio so that I would not get hurt.", my heart was crushed into pieces. I adored him so much. I wish I can see more of him in other dramas and movies in the future. Another Ady, Van Ness and Xiao Xiao Bin reunion in the future if possible, would be really great. If it's possible, I hope they make a sequel, a part II or whatever. The drama is just way to nice. I'm sure the ratings will be just as high.
This is a bracelet they feature in the drama before Van Ness lost his memory. Unfortunately, it can be bought in Taiwan only. The site that sells it according to SETTV's blog is
http://shopping.pchome.com.tw/?m=item&f=exhibit&IT_NO=BGACKL-A44313838&SR_NO=BGACKL. It costs 2599 NTD which is around 80 USD and if you will convert in peso, it's at Php 3,712. It's really nice. I wish they'd sell it here. But try visiting the site. Maybe they ship to other countries as well. It contains a Micro SD where you can save your pictures and it can be placed in a protective cover to prevent moisture and dust to damage it. Since the series has aired, a lot of people have showed interest in it.
Whether you are in love or not, or if you just got your heart broken, or already mending it... If you are getting married, or going through a divorce... Regardless of your current state and situation in love, I think this series will be able to let you realize a lot of things. It's for everyone.
The main cast of characters (from left to right): Van Ness Wu as Ren Guang Xi, Audrey "Ady" An as Liang Mu Chen, Chris Wu as Hua Tuo Ye (the other guy), Xiao Xiao Bin as Liang Xiao le/Ren Xiao Le & Tiffany Xu as He Yi Quan (the other girl).
The drama also features, "Air On G String" by Bach as Ady and Van Ness favorite piano piece:
Not a lot of people know (or would even understand), but I am also a victim of drama obsession. I've been camping in dramalandia since I was 13 years old, and that's where you will most likely find me when I have nothing to do.
One of the symptoms of this disease is daydreaming about dramas everywhere whether you are at work, walking down the stairs, sleeping, even as you are walking...creepy isn't it? Hahaha!
I am also a big Asian music fan and I think Asian music rocks! I go back and forth from Cpop to Kpop and Jpop, so I may be different (and strange) compared to other people that you can find around. I am an elder sister , a dreamer , a believer , a gamer , wanderer , blogger , an optimist , an ultimate foodie and a, hands down, fangirl . I love reading books , writing , music , photography and traveling.
I am a nurse by profession who is also a copy editor and a freelance writer . I enjoy learning how to play musical instruments and learning various languages . I am crazy, loud, spontaneous, free-spirited and most of the time, a klutz.
Eren Asentista a.k.a. Eray, 23, female, from Dumaguete City, Philippines. My personality...it's complicated. :D Believe me, you wouldn't want to know who I am. Hahaha! XD
I am currently watching...
In the coming days, I plan to watch...
In Asian Entertainment, I fancy...
(This is still lacking, but this is more or less it. LOL! I will most likely be updating this in the future to accommodate my growing list of biases but check em out!)
The things that I want to do before I die are the following:
An Asian cruise. Templestay in Korea. An African safari adventure. Backpacking to Europe. Traveling through the European railways.
