"Follow the notes upon the journey, At first sight marks one's destiny. Once the voyage comes to an end, Return lies the hasty key."~The Secret Manuscript
I came across a wonderful movie yesterday. It's a Taiwanese movie called "Secret" or "Secret That I Cannot Tell", which may already be familiar to a lot of people especially to those who love to watch Asian movies and dramas, since it was a blockbuster hit in the year 2007. Yes, it has been 3 years since the movie was released, and it's quite a pity that I just found out about it recently. Nevertheless, it's one of the many movies that a lot of people consider as one of the best Asian productions in the big screen of all time. It was released in July 2007 and a year after in countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and mainland China racking up more than a billion Yuan in the Chinese region alone. It caused quite a stir on the Taiwanese entertainment industry during it's pre and post production stages because it was a sole effort from Taiwan's pop King Jay Chou(Real Name: Chou Jie Lun). He wrote the movie, composed most of its music, directed it, and starred as the lead male actor himself. Now isn't that amazing? I knew him as a singer, songwriter, producer and musician before this big project of his. He is a very talented individual whose love for music is just overflowing and I really admire him not just as a singer but as an individual because he is so hardoworking and dedicated to his passion. He wrote and produced all of his songs since his debut album in 2000. After 10 long years, and 9 full length studio albums, he still remains a music icon and legend in mainstream Chinese/Mandarin pop. His music influence all over Asia is widespread as he talks about a wide range of issues in his songs such as war, terrorism, violence, family and education apart from love songs and things about life in general. His music is diverse and unique as he combines the influence of traditional Chinese music to modern and Western tunes. He can sing any kind of song. Be it pop, alternative rock, acoustic, hip hop, RnB and Soul. I personally like his voice. And even up to this day, both Jay Chou and Wang Leehom still remain as my favorite Chinese pop acts despite the debut of new ones.
The cast of the movie boasts an amazing line-up of actors and actresses apart from Jay Chou as the lead male actor Ye Xiang Lun, but also beautiful and equally talented actresses Kwai Lun Mei and Tzeng Kai Xuan or simply Alice Tzeng. Kwai Lun Mei plays as Jay's love interest, Lu Xiao Yu while Alice Tzeng's character is the other girl in the movie, Qing Yi. In addition to these pretty ladies, veteran Hong Kong actor Wong Chau Sang or simply Anthony Wong also starred as his father in the movie. Recognized actors Devon Song and Huan Junlang play as his friends, Abao and Alang respectively. And Zhan Yu Hao, a talented musician and piano player also cameos in the movie showing his amazing piano skills in a duel with Jay Chou which is the scene you should really look out for when you get to watch the movie.
The Plot...
Ye Xiang Lun (Jay Chou) has just transferred to a new high school, noted for its musical curriculum. He’s a gifted a pianist and also quite popular with the girls. One day, while walking through the halls of the music building, he hears a beautiful piano sonata played somewhere in the distance. He roams throughout the building until he finds the person that played the musical piece. Her name is Lu Xiao Yu (Kwai Lun Mei) and she’s also in his musical class. Xiao Yu is a bit shy, but seems to feel at ease with Xiang Lun. Nevertheless, they start to hang out and become friends. Meanwhile, another girl in class, named Qing Yi (Alice Tzeng) develops a crush on Xiang Lun. One day, Qing Yi walks into the recital room where Xiang Lun is playing the piano and plants a kiss on his lips. Xiao Yu just so happens to walk by when the kiss is given and runs out of the building when she sees them kissing. Xiao Yu doesn’t return to school after that day. Xiang Lun then attempts to track her down and along the way, he unravels the big secret behind her identity and the piano piece that he heard her play on the day he met her.
My Take on the movie...
As I have seen a lot of Asian dramas and movies with the same kind of plot, I thought this was just a typical high school love story. You'll see Jay and Lun Mei playing the piano and listening to music together, holding hands, riding a bicycle together in the picturesque spots of the countryside, kissing on a sunset, and sharing lots of other sweet moments together. I was patiently waiting for the surprise to kick in during the first 60 mins of the movie. As the title itself suggests, I told myself that there must be something more than these cutesy scenes and that this better be not the overrated tearjerker kind that I have seen countless of times before. Then finally, the mystery unfolds. That was when I started to increase the volume of my speaker so that I could pay more attention to the scenes and listen well to what was happening. And then ta-dahhh!...there goes the secret. Although this movie may seem predictable at first, it will leave you clueless and puzzled as it goes. Unless if you'll read the synopsis of the movie beforehand, it will leave you thinking and wondering as you connect the different bits and pieces of movie. If you are a frequent moviegoer, I'm sure finding the clues would be very easy, as long as you are good in paying attention to little details. However, in my case, I had to re-watch it again before I fully understood everything. The twist is unexpected and unlikely in a typical romantic high school movie; nevertheless, it made the movie even better and I really liked it. I don't want to give spoilers to those who haven't seen it yet so the secret is for you to find out.
I really look up to Jay Chou. I have so much respect for this man. He is very talented in everything, and it will make you ask if there's anything this man can't do. I have seen his music videos prior to this movie which he directed himself, and listened to some of the songs he wrote for other Asian artists like Wang Leehom, S.H.E., Jolin Tsai and many others. I must say he never fails to impress everytime. The story was brilliant and I love the idea of time traveling, music and piano fused into one. Oh, did I say time traveling? That's a clue right there. But that's the only secret that I can reveal. Watching it, I thought it was just a normal love story, then in the middle of the movie, I thought the girl had a terminal illness, or that the guy fell in love with a ghost. And I even thought Jay was crazy and delusional for imagining something that doesn’t exist. When the secret kicks in, I was taken aback by how Jay thought of such a story. This movie was his directorial debut, and just by that, it's already safe to say that he has a bright future in film making.
Aside from the plot, the soundtrack is also another strength of the movie. Jay composed most of it's music, and in the movie, you'll see lots of scenes wherein the characters are playing the piano. Jay for one showcased his amazing skills in the piano, which is something that doesn't surprise me anymore because I know he is a virtuoso in piano, violin, cello and guitar. He also plays the drums and the harmonica as well as few other traditional Chinese musical instruments. The scene which amazed me the most was that of Jay in piano duel with a certain student. Lun Mei, Alice and Anthony Wong can also be seen playing the piano in various scenes of the movie. Jay who loves classical music also incorporated it into the movie through Chopin's compositions. The cinematography is another reason to watch the movie. If I didn't know the movie was shot in Taiwan, I would think the location of the filming was in Korea.
Adding to the many other reasons to watch the movie would be actresses Kwai Lun Mei and Alice Tzeng. They are considered as Taiwan's most beautiful and talented actresses with a number of movies and dramas to boast under their belts apart from this movie. Kwai Lun Mei was praised all over the Chinese region, and even in Korea and Japan for portraying this role so well. In fact, the movie won a number of awards as well as nominations from the Golden Horse Awards and the Asia Pacific Film Awards. Although Alice Tzeng did not shine as much as Lun Mei in the movie, her charming presence made the movie even better. I personally think that Kwai Lun Mei was amazing. Her character was a mystery in itself as she appears in the screen at random times. Her character portrayal made the movie seem mysterious, hence the title.
Jay and Lun Mei's chemistry was good. It was not the best but it was convincing enough to make me as a viewer believe that something is going on between them. I personally like how Jay looks and stares at her. And I like how both of them tease each other. Movie critics have pointed out that perhaps it would have been better if Alice Tzeng was the female lead because she looks more attractive. But in my own point of view, Jay made the right decision of choosing Kwai Lun Mei for the part. In addition to that, there has been talks that a sequel to the movie will be filmed in the near future. In fact, Jay Chou himself said that he is currently writing the story for it, and that it's concept will still be about time traveling. However, instead of a sequel, I think the part two will be a spin-off as this time, it will be the guy who will time travel to the future instead of the girl. Though there is still no word whether the same actresses will still be on the sequel, Jay will still be the lead actor and director for this film. So if you are looking for a movie to watch, I highly recommend "Secret". This movie will definitely leave you thinking until the very end.
Note: If you want to watch the movie, just leave a comment or a personal message in any of my three blogs (Tumblr, Multiply or Blogger) and I will send you the links to watch the whole movie. :)
Not a lot of people know (or would even understand), but I am also a victim of drama obsession. I've been camping in dramalandia since I was 13 years old, and that's where you will most likely find me when I have nothing to do.
One of the symptoms of this disease is daydreaming about dramas everywhere whether you are at work, walking down the stairs, sleeping, even as you are walking...creepy isn't it? Hahaha!
I am also a big Asian music fan and I think Asian music rocks! I go back and forth from Cpop to Kpop and Jpop, so I may be different (and strange) compared to other people that you can find around. I am an elder sister , a dreamer , a believer , a gamer , wanderer , blogger , an optimist , an ultimate foodie and a, hands down, fangirl . I love reading books , writing , music , photography and traveling.
I am a nurse by profession who is also a copy editor and a freelance writer . I enjoy learning how to play musical instruments and learning various languages . I am crazy, loud, spontaneous, free-spirited and most of the time, a klutz.
Eren Asentista a.k.a. Eray, 23, female, from Dumaguete City, Philippines. My personality...it's complicated. :D Believe me, you wouldn't want to know who I am. Hahaha! XD
I am currently watching...
In the coming days, I plan to watch...
In Asian Entertainment, I fancy...
(This is still lacking, but this is more or less it. LOL! I will most likely be updating this in the future to accommodate my growing list of biases but check em out!)
The things that I want to do before I die are the following:
An Asian cruise. Templestay in Korea. An African safari adventure. Backpacking to Europe. Traveling through the European railways.
